MÉXICO CITY - TOP 10 SPOTS FOR CREATIVES!

We spent over 3 weeks travelling around Mexico and I’ve written a separate post on our fave spots which you can read here! But first lets’ dive in to the wonders of Mexico City! We flew in and out of the capital so we explored the city in two chunks: First staying at an Air BnB in Roma which I would really recommend and there are loads to choose from, then we finished our trip in a fancy hotel; Downtown Mexico which was totally gorgeous but pricier, however if you’re looking for a treat; totally worth it! (Big thanks to our Families as this was a wedding present!) The only drawback is that it’s located in the historical centre which is beautiful to wander around but very busy so we preferred the chilled vibes of Roma! Ok so without delay!

1. Number 1 has to be the Folk Art Museum or ‘Museo de Arte Popular’ I am obsessed with this place! Every time we visited a museum in Mexico City I would exclaim ‘this has to be one of the best museums I’ve ever visited’ but honestly this place was the overall winner I could have spent several days admiring the incredible displays!! Mexico is obviously famed for it’s folk art and this museum will leave you in no doubt of the incredible skills and craftsmanship this country has!

2. So next on the ‘Museum 'Mecca’ list is the House of Frida Kahlo, a real oasis of calm; it’s Yves Klein blue walls envelope a lush garden filled with eclectic and pre-hispanic objects collected by Frida. The interiors are similarly filled with a quirky collection of paintings, objects and Mexican crafts that inspired her. This place is a must but make sure you book your ticket in advance as queuing is unavoidable but the pre-booked internet ticket queue is at least shorter! Also after wandering around checkout the nearby cute artisan market and square, it’s a really lovely area to explore.

3. Ok So I’m going to pause briefly to give you a break from culture for FOOD! I have a massive sweet tooth and after reading Kristabel’s Mexico Blogs I knew that El Moro was a must! They have a few cafe’s across the city and we ended up visiting a couple for a tea and churros break! Roma was our fave but they are all a beautifully designed a feast for the eyes as well as the belly! Just check out those epic tiles!!!

4. Antiquing on Sunday! Wherever we go in the world we love to hit an Antique Market as there is always so much visual inspiration! We went early on a Sunday morning which was good as we beat the rush but people were still setting up so 10am is probably the sweet spot if you google maps search ‘Mercado Antiguedades Lagunilla’ then you’lll be at the centre and you can just follow the sellers around until you cross into the very crazy and more general market where they are selling fashion, food and anything!! Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures as stallholders don’t appreciate that but I guarantee it’s worth a visit!

5. Casa Luis Barragán I wouldn’t think of myself as an architecture person but I loved taking a tour (book in advance) around this beautiful considered home, the space and light was super interesting and gets you pondering on the way we live and use spaces! I also felt like the house was an ode to two of my fave colours; hello hot pink courtyard and banana yellow interiors! Pinning you for later house-spiration!

6. A general rule whenever I visit somewhere new but especially true here; just wander! Walking around this city is a must, the vibe is so fun, from the taco stands to the Mariachi bands it’s a magical world and really special to get lost in! Coincidentally it’s also how we stumbled across the very delicious Lalo!

7. Shopping! So we came across a couple of contemporary shops that we liked though the bulk of our shopping was the Crafts in Oaxaca and antiques in Puebla which I will cover in my other post. However a shop highlight that Nathan especially loved was Utilitario Mexicano where we bought some lovely colourful enamelware for our kitchen!

8. Pasteleriá Ideal - Ok yes I am very guilty of having a massive sweet tooth but honestly this place is super fun to run around ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the incredible ‘cake exhibition’ which was towering mounds of icing and brought me pure joy! Go just so that locals can laugh at your reaction!

9. I love to visit a working studio (make sure you check out my other Mexico post (when I write it) to see the ceramicist family we visited in Oaxaca!) But we LOVED visiting the M.A studio in Mexico city: pets-tick textiles-tick, ceramics-tick! This brand’s ethos is so beautiful; working with and supporting regional artisans and pairing their skills and knowledge with modern design sensibilities to produce beautiful objects for the home! I was in heaven and could not wait to part with my cash in return for the beautiful objects!

10. Last but so far from being least as this was the best night out we had the whole holiday… it’s Lucha Libre! Or Mexican wrestling! I’m not much of one for a tour but you can join a group through Air BnB. We asked our hotel to book us tickets as you can’t buy them yourself unless you have a Mexican bank account/ post code etc. We chose to go to the smaller arena; Coliseo as we had a feeling that it had a more vintage vibe which it most certainly did! Even though it’s all in Spanish you can completely tell who is the ‘villain’ and who is the ‘hero’ and the general jist of the storyline, we were laughing, booing and cheering along with the crowd and it was so much fun! For the first time ever I didn’t want a sport to end I was having too much fun! >.<
